Inaugural National Mall of Pickleball Event Brings Celebrities, Sports, and Community Together in Washington, D.C.
Something big is happening at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and it's not your typical political rally or historic commemoration. Instead, the iconic location is transforming into a sports arena for the inaugural National Mall of Pickleball event.
From September 28 to September 30, this free event, presented by the Trust for the National Mall and Humana, is set to become the talk of the town.
Imagine playing pickleball, one of America's fastest-growing sports, right next to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. For the first time ever, nine temporary pickleball courts will be set up on the JFK Hockey Fields. And guess what? You don't have to be a pro to join in. The event is designed to accommodate nearly 800 players across all skill levels, offering 180 hours of free court time.
But that's not all. The event is pulling out all the stops by featuring some big names. Award-winning journalist Katie Couric and actor, comedian, and U.S. veteran Rob Riggle are not just attending; they're participating. Riggle, who's also serving as the event's emcee and color commentator, said,
"Sports are a great way to bring people together – especially pickleball with such an iconic backdrop. I’m looking forward to joining all of the pickleball players courtside for some friendly competition and maybe even a little bit of heckling."
The event has something for everyone. If you're a media junkie, you'll love the media tournament where newsrooms will duke it out for bragging rights as the "Best Media Picklers." Local sports leagues aren't left out either; there's a special DMV-area recreation league tournament. And if you're new to the game or want to improve your skills, there will be on-site pickleball lessons and clinics. Major League Pickleball’s newly formed D.C. Pickleball Team will even put on an exhibition match.
Why is this event such a big deal? Well, it's not just about the sport; it's about the community and the venue.
The National Mall has been a gathering place for Americans for over a century, a place to connect across cultures and generations. This event aims to celebrate that spirit and the life-changing benefits of pickleball, particularly for seniors. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, over half of core pickleball players in the U.S. are 55 and older. This event aims to show how pickleball is helping America’s seniors stay active and engaged.
"At its core, Humana is committed to championing seniors, promoting healthy and active lifestyles, and fostering social connections. We are excited to bring pickleball—an accessible, inclusive and friendly sport—to one of the most special places in our country where everyone, regardless of background, has the opportunity to connect, be active, and live their healthiest life." - Bruce Broussard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Humana
So, mark your calendars and get ready to reserve your spot. Online reservations for free court time and clinics open on September 14 at 12:00 PM ET. Whether you're a pickleball pro or a complete newbie, this is one event you won't want to miss.
